When I think of water, I don't just see a resource: I see life itself. Every drop we conserve, every solution we find to address drought, is a step towards a more resilient world.

 

 

 

My name is Samantha Green, I am a biologist and my work is dedicated to protecting one of the most precious and fragile resources on the planet: water. Growing up between Jordan, the land of my parents, and Italy, where I completed my studies, I quickly learned what it means to live with the awareness that water is a rare commodity.

My goal is clear: to find solutions to address the global water crisis, a challenge that affects millions of people, especially in arid regions. But the problem isn't just them. Drought is becoming a universal threat, and we must act now to protect our future. I have worked in many places around the world, but it is in the arid lands of Jordan that I found my true inspiration. Here, where every drop of water is precious, I have learned that tackling drought requires innovation, collaboration and a deep respect for nature.

My story begins in a small village near the Dead Sea, where I spent the summers with my grandparents. It was a simple place, surrounded by rocky hills and plants adapted to a harsh climate. I still remember how my family talked about water as something sacred. It wasn't just a resource: it was life. Every day, my grandfather took me with him to the village wells. He showed me how to measure the water level, how to conserve every drop, and how to recognize the plants that survived on those limited resources. Despite the difficulties, there was a sense of balance: people respected the land, and the land respected them back.

When I moved to Italy to study biology, I took those memories with me. I realized that water scarcity was not just a problem from my childhood, but a global challenge. During a university course, I studied the water cycle and how climate change was altering it. That's when I decided to focus on drought-related research. The roots of my work are deeply personal. Every time I return to the places of my childhood, I see how the situation has gotten worse. Rivers that once brought life have dwindled to trickles, and entire villages struggle to survive. This is what drives me to work every day to make a difference, even if the journey is long and full of challenges.

Drought is not just a natural phenomenon. It is the result of a complex mix of factors ranging from climate change to the unsustainable use of resources. During my studies, I learned that to understand drought, you need to look beyond just the lack of rain. Climate change is undoubtedly one of the main causes. Rising temperatures mean more evaporation, which dries out the soil and reduces the moisture available to plants. At the same time, precipitation becomes more unpredictable, with long periods of drought interrupted by heavy rains that fail to be absorbed by the ground. This creates a cycle of degradation that affects not only crops, but also natural ecosystems. Another crucial factor is the excessive use of water resources. In many areas, rivers and lakes are being exploited beyond their limits to support agriculture, industry and growing cities. The result is a decline in groundwater reserves, which take decades or even centuries to regenerate. During one of my field searches, I visited an area of Jordan where wells dug by generations of farmers had completely dried up. The soil was so dry that it cracked underfoot, an image I will never forget.

Finally, there is the degradation of the soil. Without adequate plant cover, the soil loses its ability to retain water. This problem is particularly evident in areas subject to deforestation or intensive agriculture, where the land is exploited to the point of exhaustion. I happened to analyze soil samples in an agricultural area, and the results were clear: very low nutrient levels and a structure that did not allow water to penetrate. The consequences of all this are dramatic. In addition to crop failure and drinking water shortages, drought creates social instability. In some regions of the world, competition for water resources has led to conflicts, and entire communities have been forced to migrate. It's a global problem, but its roots lie in the choices we make every day. Understanding these dynamics is essential to address the crisis. For this reason, my work focuses not only on monitoring drought, but also on finding solutions that can mitigate its impact, both locally and globally.

One of the most significant projects I have worked on is located in the heart of the Jordanian desert, a region where arid soil and extreme temperatures represent a daily challenge for local communities. Here, water is more precious than gold, and finding sustainable solutions is a matter of survival. My mission was simple in theory, but complex in practice: monitor water resources and implement strategies to best use them. Collaborating with local farmers and specialized technicians, we have installed advanced sensors to monitor soil moisture. These devices, connected to a digital management system, allow us to know exactly when and how much to water, reducing waste.

We have also introduced drip irrigation systems, a technology that uses perforated tubes to release water directly to the roots of plants. During the first few weeks, I regularly visited the farms to show how the new systems worked. A visibly skeptical farmer told me: "It can't work here, the desert takes it all back." But after a few months, his fields showed signs of recovery: the plants grew stronger, and the water consumed was almost half what it was before. A key aspect of the project was involving local communities. It's not just about bringing technologies, but about building knowledge and skills. We have organized training courses, explaining the importance of sustainable agricultural techniques and the value of saving water. During one of these meetings, a young woman told me, “I didn't think we could do so much with so little.” That moment showed me that real change starts from people, from their commitment and their willingness to adapt.

One of the most exciting results was the recovery of a small natural oasis. In the past, water had been diverted for agriculture, leaving the area completely dry. With targeted resource management work, we managed to restore the flow of water, bringing life back to that small corner of the desert. When I saw the first birds returning, I felt overwhelmed with hope. This project taught me that, even in the most inhospitable places, it is possible to make a difference. With the right technologies, a clear vision and community collaboration, the desert can stop being an enemy and become a place of opportunity.

Addressing the drought crisis requires creative solutions and the adoption of technologies that can transform limitations into opportunities. Every day, in my work, I look for ways to combine tradition and innovation, respecting the environment and local cultures. One of the most promising technologies I'm working on is desalination. In Jordan, as in many other arid regions, sea water could represent an inexhaustible resource, if made drinkable. Modern desalination plants are much more efficient than in the past, and we are studying ways to power these systems with solar energy, thus reducing CO2 emissions. During a visit to a new pilot plant near the Red Sea, I saw the potential of this technology: reservoirs of crystal-clear fresh water ready to irrigate fields that, until recently, were barren.

Another innovation I am focused on is the reuse of wastewater. Instead of letting used water go to waste, we can treat it and reintroduce it into the cycle. In the most isolated villages, we have installed small treatment plants that provide water for irrigation and other needs. This approach not only conserves resources, but reduces pollution, improving the overall quality of the environment. However, technical solutions alone are not enough. Education and awareness are key. I have started programs in schools to teach young people the importance of water. During one of these lessons, I asked a group of children: “How much water do you think we use for a 5-minute shower?” Their answers, which were exaggeratedly low, showed me how much there is still to do to build real awareness. From that day, each student started keeping a diary to monitor their water consumption, and the results were incredible.

Among the successes of which I am most proud is a reforestation project in a desert area. We created an artificial oasis using soil moisture conservation techniques and drought-resistant plants. In just a few years, that arid expanse has transformed into a refuge for plants, animals and people. Every time I visit that oasis, I see concrete proof that change is possible. Innovations are powerful tools, but the key to success lies in collaboration. When scientists, governments, businesses and communities work together, we can tackle even the greatest challenges. Drought is a complex problem, but I firmly believe that with passion, determination and ingenuity we can build a future in which water is a guaranteed right for all.
